Keyboard Essentials Course
The keyboard is one of the most powerful tools a modern music producer can master. As a complete instrument capable of handling bass lines, chord progressions, and melodies simultaneously, it sits at the heart of virtually every genre — from Afrohouse to hip-hop to cinematic scoring.
At DJ4Life, our Keyboard Essentials Course is designed for producers, DJs, and aspiring musicians in Johannesburg who want to move beyond loops and samples and start composing with real musical understanding. Whether you’re connecting a MIDI keyboard to Ableton, FL Studio, or Logic, this course gives you the theory and technique to use it fluently.
All lessons are one-on-one with your lecturer in our fully equipped Fourways studio — so you progress at your own pace, not the class’s.
What will be covered
Major and Minor Diatonic Scales — The foundation of all Western music. You’ll learn to play and hear scales across the keyboard, building muscle memory and pitch recognition.
Major and Minor Triads — Understanding the building blocks of chords and how to construct them in any key.
Chord Extensions and Progressions — Move beyond basic triads into 7ths, 9ths, and the chord progressions that drive real songs.
Keyboard Grooves, Fills and Melodies — Apply your theory practically by learning to play rhythmic grooves, melodic fills, and lead lines used in contemporary music production.
Pentatonic Scales and Improvisation — The most versatile scale in popular music. Learn to improvise confidently over any chord progression.
Common Chord Patterns and Scales — Industry-standard progressions used across Afrohouse, R&B, pop, and electronic music, so your productions sound intentional and polished.
Prescribed Project — You’ll complete a practical project that demonstrates your new skills — a real piece of music you’ve composed and arranged yourself.

Keyboard Training FAQ
Do I need to own a keyboard before starting?
What software will I learn on?
You’ll work with professional DAWs used in the industry. Your lecturer will also guide you on connecting your own MIDI keyboard to your preferred software at home.
Is this course suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely. The course is structured to take you from zero — no prior keyboard or music theory experience needed. Many of our students start with no musical background at all
How is this different from traditional piano lessons?
This course is built specifically for music producers and DJs. The focus is on modern production techniques, chord theory for contemporary genres, and practical application in a DAW — not classical grades or sheet music reading.
Can I combine this with other DJ4Life courses?
Yes, and we recommend it. Keyboard Essentials pairs particularly well with our Music Production Course and Music Theory Course for a complete foundation.
